The rainy season brings much-needed relief from the hot sun, but it also presents some electrical safety challenges for our homes and businesses. Here are some essential tips to keep you and your loved ones safe during the rainy season:

Beware of Downed Power Lines

  • Downed power lines, which are power lines that have fallen to the ground, are extremely dangerous, even if they appear inactive. Always assume a downed line is live and avoid contact with it or anything touching it.
  • Maintain a safe distance of at least 30 feet (think car length) from the line and anything it’s touching. Don’t be a hero and keep others away as well.
  • Immediately report downed power lines to the nearest AEDC office or call our helpline on 08039070070.

Protect Yourself Indoors

  • Minimize appliance use during thunderstorms: Avoid using electrical appliances during heavy rain and thunderstorms. Power surges can damage electronics and pose a safety risk. Unplug non-essential appliances like TVs, computers and even phone chargers too.
  • Water and electricity don’t mix: Avoid using electrical appliances or switches with wet hands. Standing in water or touching wet surfaces while using electrical equipment can lead to electric shock.
  • Beware of Flooding: If your home is flooded, turn off the power at the main breaker box if it can be done safely. Do not touch any electrical equipment or wiring while standing in water. Once the floodwaters recede, have a qualified electrician inspect your electrical system for damage before restoring power.
  • Surge Protection: Invest in surge protectors for your valuable electronics. These devices can help safeguard against damage caused by power surges during storms.

Outdoor Safety Tips

  • Stay clear of power lines during strong winds: Heavy rain and wind can cause power lines to sway or snap. Avoid standing under trees, power lines, or other objects that could come into contact with a downed line.
  • Use Extension Cords Responsibly: Avoid using extension cords outdoors in wet weather. Only use outdoor-rated cords and keep them off the ground to prevent damage and electrical hazards.

  • Working Together for a Safe Rainy Season:

By following these safety tips and staying informed about weather conditions, you can significantly reduce the risk of electrical hazards during the rainy season. At AEDC, ensuring safe electricity is our top priority because we prioritize your safety above all else.
