TCN Speaks on Reduction in Allocation to DisCos

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Thursday said that there has been a gradual decrease in available generation into the grid due to gas constraints.

The TCN General Manager Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, in a statement, said this has impacted the quantum of bulk power available on the transmission grid for onward transmission to the distribution load centres nationwide.

“TCN is doing everything possible in collaboration with stakeholders in the power sector to ensure that it continues to keep the grid intact in spite of the current low power generated into the system,” she said.

Consequently, she said upon the current load on the grid, the load distributed to the distribution load centres has also reduced, as TCN can only transmit what is generated.

“TCN is committed to ensuring a gradual increase in electricity supply to load centres as gas improves to power available thermal plants.

TCN Blames Gas Constraints for Low Generation, Reduced Allocation to Discos

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Thursday provided insights into the prevailing gradual decrease in available electricity generation into the grid.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, said the unfortunate trend is due to gas constraints to the thermal generating companies, regretting that this has impacted the quantum of bulk power available on the transmission grid for onward transmission to the distribution load centers nationwide.

Mbah, however, assured that TCN is doing everything possible in collaboration with stakeholders in the power sector to ensure that it continues to keep the grid intact in spite of the current low power generated into the system.

“TCN hereby announces that there has been a gradual decrease in available generation into the grid due to gas constraints to the thermal generating companies, which has impacted the quantum of bulk power available on the transmission grid for onward transmission to the distribution load centers nationwide.

TCN Blames Low Gas Supply on Reduced Electricity

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says the decrease in power transmission to electricity distribution companies was due to constraints experienced by thermal generating companies.

In a statement Thursday, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said it is, however, working with relevant stakeholders in the power sector to keep the grid intact despite the current low power generated into the system.

It stated that the decrease has “impacted the quantum of bulk power available on the transmission grid for onward transmission to the distribution load centres nationwide.”

“TCN is doing everything possible in collaboration with stakeholders in the power sector to ensure that it continues to keep the grid intact despite the current low power generated into the system.

“Consequent upon the current load on the grid, load distributed to the distribution load centres has also reduced, as TCN can only transmit what is generated,” he stated.

NLCFaults Tinubu’s Economic Policies, Says Nigeria Electricity Sector in Coma

he Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has asked the Federal Government to reverse its policy on fuel subsidy and planned privatisation of the transmission sector of the power sector, saying Nigeria’s electricity sector is comatose.

Speaking at the 21st Daily Trust Dialogue & Presentation of African of the Year Award in Abuja, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said the reversal of the programme was necessary because the Nigerian worker, who pays 1000 to and from work, spends 4,000 for the same journey to his or her office.

“I earn N30,000 a month and I will now go and pay N500 to be able to withdraw my money from POS. The situation is getting worse and will continue to worsen until we do a policy reversal,” he said, adding that the power sector, which should drive the economy by providing power for the various businesses to thrive, is comatose and unhealthy for the economy.

Ajaero said the Tinubu administration should look at the best option that would serve the Nigerian people. This he can do by drawing lessons from the past attempts at the electricity sector.

Good News for Electricity Consumers as Nigerian Firm Begins Work in $1.3bn Power Plant

Mainstream Energy Solution Limited has begun operations at the Zungeru hydropower plant almost one year after winning the concession.

The company’s subsidiary, Penstock Energy Limited, is now managing the newly built 700MW plant in Zungeru, which was made possible by a $1.3 billion loan from China.

In February of 2023, the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) guaranteed the concession to Mainstream Energy.

According to reports, under the concession, Mainstream Energy must pay the Nigerian government $70 million annually for 30 years in exchange for operating the plant. The company’s CEO, Audu Lamu, said the real work begins in ensuring that the asset is managed according to international standards. The Kainji and Jebba hydroelectric plants, managed by Mainstream Energy, cumulatively produce 1,338MW, contributing about 33% to Nigeria’s current power supply capacity of 4,000 megawatts.
