Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan and the power sector
In 2022, the Nigeria Energy Transition Plan was launched to chart the pathway for Nigeria’s ambitious plan of achieving net zero by 2060. This plan focused on reducing emissions across five prominent areas: Power, Cooking, Oil and Gas, Transport and Industry.
These areas are responsible for about 65% of the country’s 275 metric tons (mt) of carbon dioxide equivalent (total greenhouse gas emissions), and the power sector has the highest proportion of these emissions.
The energy transition plan is commendable with its strategy to move away from fossil fuel sources such as oil, coal and gas (which is the primary feedstock of power plants in Nigeria) towards renewables has been gathering momentum, and the industrial and economic effects of this shift to emerging technologies such as biomass, hydro, geothermal, wind, solar, and other energy sources will only increase over the next few years.

ENGIE Energy Empowers Over 3,000 Nigerians Through Renewable Mini-Grids Energy Systems
ENGIE Energy Access, a provider of solar homes systems and mini-grids solutions in Nigeria has impacted the lives of over 3,000 Nigerians with access to renewable energy through the construction of its mini-grids in Niger State.
The beneficiaries included households, businesses, schools and healthcare centres in rural communities of the state.
This was made known by Onyinye Anene-Nzelu, Head, Mini-Grids, ENGIE Energy Access Nigeria during a panel session at the 2nd Edition of the Solar Week Nigeria 2023 Conference & Awards, held in Lagos.
Ogun Communities Bemoan Four Years Blackout
Residents of the Arakanga area in Abeokuta-North local government, Ogun State, have expressed their dissatisfaction with the inconsistent power supply and a prolonged four-year blackout.
This situation has severely impacted local businesses and inflicted hardship upon the community.
The residents who spoke with PUNCH Metro on Sunday noted that while some communities are experiencing erratic power supply for more than a year, some areas have been completely deprived of electricity.
During a four-hour tour of the communities, our correspondent observed a complete absence of electricity supply.

40% Hike in Prepaid Meter Prices Will Widen Metering Gap, Lower Demand
Some stakeholders in the Nigerian power industry have warned that the latest 40 per cent increase in prices of prepaid electricity meters would further widen the number of customers not yet metered by the distribution companies (Discos).
They also alerted the federal government that the new meters approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) last week would cause a decline in the demand for prepaid meters under the Meter Assets Providers (MAP) scheme and also lead to an increase in the number of customers on estimated billings.
The stakeholders in their separate interventions argued that the increase in meter prices would negatively impact Nigerians’ purchasing power, especially with the current economic hardship and the minimum wage still at N30,000.
EKEDC Gets Certification in Information Security Management System
Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has been conferred with an international certification in Information Security Management System, ISO 27001:2013.
Dr Tinuade Sanda, Chief Executive Officer, EKEDC, said this in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos.
Sanda said that the company was thrilled to receive the certification after a rigorous audit process by internationally certified auditors based in India.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ISO 27001 certification is the global standard for information security management systems to ensure that organisations keep information assets secured.
