Niger Owes Nigeria N4bn for Power Supply – NERC
Niger currently owes Nigeria N4.22bn ($5.48m: $/N769.27 exchange rate) for power supply; the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s just released first quarter report has stated.
According to the report, Niger’s state power firm, Nigerien Electricity Society, was yet to remit the $5.48m invoice issued for power supply by the Nigerian market operator.
“None of the underlisted international customers made any payment against the cumulative $16.11m invoice issued to them in 2023/Q1; Paras-SBEE ($3.46m), Transcorp-SBEE ($3.85 million), Mainstream-NIGELEC ($5.48m) and Odukpani-CEET ($3.32 million).

NDPHC Restores Electricity Supply to Eko and Aba DisCos
Commercial concerns and individuals in two of Nigeria’s largest commercial cities, Lagos and Aba, have heaved a sigh of relief following the restoration yesterday of electric power to two electricity distribution firms in their places by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC).
The NDPHC, set up by the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration as an intervention agency to grapple with the fast deteriorating power sector, ceased on Sunday to supply electricity to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) in Lagos and Aba Power DisCo, Nigeria’s newest electricity distribution firm which serves nine of the 17 local government areas in Abia State, over some issues with natural gas producers and suppliers like Shell and ExxonMobil as well as local petroleum firms.

Market Operators to Review Performance of Electricity Supply Industry
The Nigerian electricity market operators have rolled out plans to review the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) performance for the country.
The chairman of the NESI market participants and stakeholders roundtable (NMPSR), Mr Stephen Ogaji made this known while addressing a news conference in Abuja.
The NESI is composed of the Generation Companies (GenCos), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Distribution Companies (DisCos), and the consumers.
Mr Ogaji explained that the review which is scheduled to take place from October 30 to November 1, would provide a platform for a comprehensive discussion of the issues and prospects associated with the industry.
Gas Supply Constraints Niger Delta Power Generation
The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) is experiencing gas supply limitations and presently reducing generation of electricity from 10 of its plants.
The situation is currently constraining Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) and Aba Power Ltd throwing some of their customers into darkness.
Some companies and residents in the Lekki Peninsula area of Lagos relying on supplies from Eko DisCo confirmed that they have been without electricity since Sunday afternoon.
“We were surprised that this outage had lasted so long because there has been a remarkable improvement in supply from Eko DisCo in the last two months”, an engineer with a manufacturing firm in Ibeju Lekki local government area told newsmen on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media on the issue.

Nigeria Deploys $550m Secured Loans To Energize Communities
The federal government is taking strong steps to provide electricity to highly underserved communities across the geopolitical zones in the country after it deployed about $550 million secured from both the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
This is being intensified after Siemens announced a delay in its deal with the federal government to debottleneck Nigeria’s electricity transmission facilities which now faces another five-year delay.
The delay statement from the company coincided with the visit of the World Bank boss to Nigeria to assess ongoing deployment of solar mini grids to deeply needed communities.
