Integrating Wind and Solar Will Make the National Grid Stronger – Erabor Okogun
Erabor Okogun, Head of Energy Infrastructure Advisory at KPMG Nigeria, has said that integrating wind and solar will make Nigeria’s national grid stronger and able to withstand collapses.
He said this while addressing the possibility of developing wind power in Nigeria during a webinar on the electricity sector organized by Nextier Power in Abuja on Wednesday, July 26.
According to him, the three factors to consider when looking at developing a wind power project in the country, are:

The Head of Mini-Grids at Engie Energy Access, Onyinye Anene-Nzelu, has hinted that the New Electricity Act would revolutionize the power sector by breaking the long-standing monopoly and inviting a multitude of investors into the market.
Anene-Nzelu, who made the declaration during the Webinar tagged ‘Embracing Opportunities for a Prosperous Power Sector,’ which was held recently, the new electricity act would create a more competitive market as it would be opened up to more investors.

NERC insists on review of N5b TCN CAPEX
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has insisted it shall review any Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) that exceeds N5 billion, it was learnt yesterday.
It was also gathered that the NERC insisted that “All capital expenditure allowance not expended in a budget year shall be clawed back during the year-end minor review.”
It was also learnt that the essence of the review is to ensure adherence to the TCN’s license mandating the filing of annual budget/estimate of investments and revenue requirements with the NERC to prudence, transparency, and value-for-money in the yearly expenditure; and ensure adequate provision for cost recovery pursuant to section 96(2)(a) of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA).

‘$50m Power Plant In Lagos’ll Drive Economic Growth’
Elektron Energy Development Strategies Limited (Elektron Energy) has partnered with Eko Electricity Distribution Plc. (EKEDP) to construct a 30-megawatts (MW) embedded natural gas-fired power plant worth $50 million in Lagos.
The Independent Power Plant (IPP) project is expected to supply uninterrupted electricity through dedicated 33kV and 11kV distribution networks exclusively to identified customers within the Victoria Island franchise area of Lagos State.
Regarded as the first of its kind because a natural gas IPP will be directly embedded into Disco’s distribution network for supply to identified end-user customers, the project has the potential to eradicate up to 1000 diesel generators within its coverage area, drastically reducing emissions and promoting a greener environment.

Group Urges FG To Clear Air On Payment Of Electricity Subsidy
The Akwa Ibom Human Rights Community has challenged the federal government over claims of payment of subsidy on electricity tariffs in Nigeria.
At a recent electricity consumers forum meeting in Akwa Ibom,the group maintained there was no way subsidy could have existed since electricity distribution companies are profit-making organizations and doing do so to stay in business.
“How can the government claim that it was subsidizing the profit-making objectives of profit-making companies, which are not even supplying commensurate energy to the people ”,the group queries in a communique signed by its National Coordinators, Barrister Clifford Thomas

Solar Energy Desalination Plants Increasingly Provide Water For Africa
Clean drinking water is an issue across many countries on the African continent. As renewable energy becomes more available and cheaper, some of this is being used for desalination to quench the thirsty millions. Desalination is moving to the heart of water supply for those countries in Africa with access to the sea or to salt lakes. The expansion of renewable energy sources across the continent will enable desalination without worsening greenhouse gas emissions.
