Why Abuja is in Darkness, Explains AEDC
Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has listed reasons why Abuja and other franchise areas have been thrown into darkness since this year.
In a statement, AEDC said that the technical challenges were due to a combination of inclement weather conditions, vandalism, routine maintenance and technical installations at various locations within its franchise areas.
“While we sincerely apologise for any inconveniences caused, we assure you that the ongoing technical installations across our franchise areas are aimed at improving our power supply” the said.

Infini Power, NCDMB Sign Power Supply Agreement
A member of Tetracore Energy Group, Infini Power Limited in collaboration with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board CDMB and the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement.
The PPA is targeted at supplying independent power to the Nigerian Oil and Gas Park Scheme (NOGaPS) Industrial Park located at Odukpani, Cross Rivers State, and Emeyal-1, Ogbia, Bayelsa State.
The agreement was facilitated by the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria, established in 2020, to implement the Nigerian Gas Master Plan and management of the domestic supply of gas to strategic sectors, especially the power sector.

Buhari Inaugurates Afam Power Plant, Decries Gas Supply Gaps
President Muhammadu Buhari has decried the gas supply insecurity to the power sector in the country, despite the fact that Nigeria has one of the largest gas reserves in the world.
Buhari stated this yesterday when he inaugurated the Afam 3 Fast Power Station, owned by the Transafam Power Limited, at Okoloma-Afam community in Oyigbo local government area of Rivers State.
The president, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, said the insecurity in gas supply was hampering reforms in the power sector.
He said, “Despite having one of the largest gas reserves in the world, gas supply security for the power sector has been inconsistent and it is hampering reforms.

Power Management: The Lesson TCN Needs From NAFDAC

This should be an important lesson to not just regulatory agencies but also state-owned enterprises (SoEs) like the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The TCN and its market operating unit, popularly known as the Market Operator, have been in the news in the last few weeks for the wrong reasons. The TCN has been threatening to shut down nine electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and three power generation companies (GenCos) over various amounts owed to government bodies in the power sector for ancillary services.

Cheap Electricity: Nigeria Ranks 109 Amid 168% Tariff Hike in Eight Years
Despite a near-zero improvement in power supply efficiency under the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and contrary to the boast by the Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, that Nigeria enjoys the cheapest electricity, findings have shown that over 100 countries offer more affordable electricity compared to Nigeria.
Painfully, this is coming as the current regime has, in the last eight years, increased electricity tariff by over 168 per cent, with billing jumping from an average of N23.5 a kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2015 to N63 kWh as of January this year. Nigerians paid between N16 and N31kWh in 2015 for electricity consumption. Currently, a consumer pays between N55kWh to N71kWh, depending on the categorisation.

ECOWAS Standards Experts Meet in Accra to Build Capacity on Off-Grid Solar PV Products
Some standards experts from member countries of ECOWAS are meeting in Accra, to build their capacities on the implementation and enforcement of the use of Off-Grid Solar PV products and technologies.
The meeting will enable the standards experts in the Sub-region to enforce two standards related to solar PV Off-Grid products up to 350 watt and adopt a common testing methods for solar products, services and technologies.
The experts were drawn from institutions responsible for enforcement of standards in Ghana, Nigeria, Cabo Verde, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia, to share their knowledge and ideas on the use of Off-Grid Solar PV products, technologies and services in their respective countries.
