The Federal Government ought to pay a greater attention to the frustrations being experienced by many Nigerians in the course of procuring prepaid electricity meters. In a country of highly unstable power supply, the prepaid meter is the only panacea to prevent undue exploitation of consumers from the estimated billing system of power distribution companies. Sadly, millions of Nigerians are yet to exit the estimated electricity billing fraud due to the high cost of meters, which the 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos) are supposed to release under the Meter Asset Providers (MAPs) programme.

Beyond Transformer Acquisition, Consumers Intensify Call for Improved Electricity Supply
As the epileptic electricity supply persists across the country, consumers have intensified their desire to see better supply of electricity from the grid to enhance their lives and boost economic activities.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has in recent weeks announced that several transformers and electrical infrastructure accessories were delivered to substations in different parts of the country.
On January 24, 2023, the TCN said a brand new 100MVA Power Transformer was placed on plinth at Ijora 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Lagos Region of TCN.
Optimisation of National Grid critical to Energy Sustainability
Managing Director of General Electric Power, in charge of Gas Power Plant (Anglophone West Africa), Mohammed Mijindadi, said full optimisation of Nigeria national grid should be a critical part of the discourse around achieving sustainable energy.
In a session with the media, Mijindadi said energy transition would help the country to achieve the level of energy mix required to fully optimise the national grid and wean the sector from the current risks.hydro and gas was important for powering the country dreamed industrialization, arguing that gas is still very critical to the country future energy need.
Subsidise Renewable Energy to Solve Power Problem CSOs Tell FG
The high rising demand for energy and inadequate power supply has crippled economic activities in Nigeria, hence Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on Friday, canvassed for subsidisation of renewable energy as a better alternative to fossil fuel.
The Executive Secretary of Lift Humanity Foundation, Pius Oko, during an assessment of renewable energy governance in Abuja, said as Nigeria plans an energy transition, the Federal Government should focus its resources on subsidising renewable energy rather than fossil fuels.

Vietnam Aims to Supply More Renewable Energy to Combat Climate Change
Vietnam trade ministry has set the target to have 15-20 per cent renewable energy sources in its total primary energy supply by 2030, local media reported on Monday, February 6, 2023.
The rate would increase to 25-30 per cent by 2045, the local newspaper Vietnam News reported.
It cited an action plan on climate change response and green growth of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Greenhouse gas emissions from the electricity production sector were to be maintained at about 42 million tonnes of carbon dioxide by 2050, the newspaper said.
Grenergy Commissions Three 37 MW Solar Plants in Colombia
Spanish renewable energy producer and specialist in the development, construction and management of photovoltaic, wind and storage projects, Grenergy, is consolidating its position in Colombia with the commissioning of three 30 MW solar plants, Cerritos, La Medina and Los Caballeros, which will generate enough energy to supply electricity to 40,000 homes, saving 27,000 tons of CO2 per year.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Irene Vélez, and the Spanish Ambassador to Colombia, JoaquÃn de ArÃstegui, accompanied by David Ruiz de Andrés, CEO of Grenergy, as well as other authorities, presided over the institutional inauguration ceremony of these photovoltaic parks, which are part of a group of 37 MW generation projects that will produce a total of 69 GWh of renewable electricity per year. The commercialisation of this energy is already assured thanks to the long-term energy sales agreement reached with Celsia.

25MW Geothermal Project Plans Advances in Canada
DEEP Earth Energy Production Corp. has begun engineering and procurement activities for a planned 25 MW geothermal facility in Saskatchewan. Field construction is intended for the third quarter.
The firm claimed that the reservoir characteristics could support the construction of multiple geothermal expansion facilities in southeast Saskatchewan over several years. The project includes a 5 MW power purchase agreement with SaskPower.
The facility is planned to be built in two phases: 5 MW and an additional 20 MW at the same location. Production and injection wells are planned to be drilled to a depth of around 3.5 kilometres and horizontally for an additional 3 kilometres.

PM Modi Calls for Energy Sector Investors to Explore India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urged global investors to explore investment opportunities in the country energy sector, saying India is the most opportune place. In his inaugural address at the India Energy Week 2023, he said the Budget (for 2023-34) had provided Rs 10 lakh crore for capital expenditure, which will boost green hydrogen, solar power, and road sectors.
The Prime Minister recalled several initiatives taken by the government to promote green energy and make India net zero by 2070. The budget 2023-24 has provided Rs 35,000 crore to the petroleum and natural gas ministry for achieving the net-zero target.

IsDB Provides US$ 133.59 million for the Cameroon-Chad Electricity Interconnection Project
The Board of Executive Directors of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) held a meeting chaired by the Bank’s President and Group Chairman, H.E. Dr Muhammad Al Jasser. During the meeting, the financing of a critical energy infrastructure project was approved, and reports on the Banks recent performance were reviewed.
The honourable Board members approved an amount of EUR 122.73 million (US$ 133.59 million) for the Cameroon-Chad Electricity Interconnection Project (Cameroon Southern-Northern Networks) in Cameroon, aimed at interconnecting the north electricity system and south system, and to enable Electricity to be traded between Cameroon and Chad. The project key outputs are that high Voltage Transmission Lines will increase from 0.00 km in 2023 to 532.00 km in 2028, and the number of sub-stations will increase from 0.00 in 2023 to 4.00 (Each 50 MVA) in 2028. Also, Electricity transmitted from Southern to Northern Cameroon is expected to grow from a baseline of 0.00 MWh in 2023 to 522,000 MWh in 2028, and Electricity traded between Cameroon, and Chad should increase from 0.00 MWh in 2023 to 438,000 MWh in 2028.
