Kano 10 Megawatts Hydropower Plant Completed, Begins Test Run
The Kano State Government has announced the completion of its 10 megawatts hydropower plant at Tiga Dam.
The Managing Director of Kano Hydro and Energy Development Company (KHEDCO), Hadiza Tukur, told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday.
Mrs Tukur said the power plant will serve the state water treatment plant at Tamburawa and the street lights in the metropolis, among others.
She said the power plant is awaiting certification from the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA).
Nigeria MDAs to Spend N22 Billion on Generator Maintenance in 2023
Some Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government in Nigeria will spend an estimated N22 billion on generator maintenance in 2023, a PREMIUM TIMES analysis has shown.
The N22 billion will be spent on maintenance and fueling generators due to Nigeria unstable power supply.
The amount is spread across over 200 MDAs and is expected to be higher because many agencies did not indicate their generator expenses in the 2023 budget proposal.
Some of the institutions whose budgetary expenditures on generators were not listed in the government budget document include the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigeria Customs Service, and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), among others.
Wrong To Place Energy Security on Private Refineries NLC
It is a national shame for the Federal Government to abandon public refineries built with trillions of taxpayers funds and place our energy security on private refineries, President of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has said.
Wabba, in his New Year message, said the emphasis and focus should be to ensure that public refineries thrive side by side with private refineries.
He said the neglect of our public refineries, near total reliance on imported petroleum products, a phony subsidy regime and the associated costs define everything that is wrong with Nigeria.

85,510 Customers Metered in First Quarter as Ibadan DisCo Leads
Ibadan Electricity Distribution Plc (IBEDC) metered a total of 30,404 customers in 2022/Q1, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has disclosed.
The commission in its Q1 2022 said under the updated Meter Assets Provider (MAP) and National Mass Metering Program (NMMP) Regulations (2021), a total of 85,510 additional end-user customers were metered in during the period under review.
NERC further disclosed that 29,282 (34.24%) customers were metered under the NMMP scheme while 56,228 (65.76%) customers were metered under the MAP intervention during the period.

TCN Takes Delivery of Two New 150MVA Power Transformers, Accessories
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has taken took delivery of two brand new 150 MVA, 330/132/33kV power transformers and accessories at its Central Store Ojo, Lagos State.
The two 150MVA power transformers and their accessories were delivered to Ojo stores from the Tincan Island port, Apapa, Lagos, last week, the General Manager Public Affairs, TCN, Ndidi Mbah, said in a statement.
TCN, she said, also has another two 150MVA power transformers awaiting delivery to Ojo Stores at the Lagos Port even as it is expecting the arrival of different capacities of transformers and their accessories to berth at the port very soon.
NERC: 37 Nigerians Died from Electricity-related Incidents in Q1, 2022
At least 37 Nigerians lost their lives in electricity-related accidents between January and March 2022, a new report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has indicated.
In all, NERC in the report, noted that the commission received 78 reports on health and safety issues, with the total number of incidents being 55, while 18 Nigerians sustained various injuries as a result.
Recently, Nigeria power sector safety regulatory body, the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), said it was ramping up a nationwide audit of facilities to curb the use of substandard materials, which sometimes increase the rate of accidents.
Head of the organisation, Mr Aliyu Tahir, noted that more testing and certification of electrical materials and equipment was being carried out nationwide to ensure that they are of quality and built to specifications.
Zambia Extends Electricity Rationing to Mining Firm
Zambia has started rationing electricity supply to mining firms following reduced power generation after a big drop in water levels in lake Kariba, the chairman of state-owned power utility Zesco said on Tuesday.
Water levels in the lake were down at 1.66% of usable storage on Monday for the Kariba North Bank Power Station in Zambia and the Kariba South Bank Power Station on the Zimbabwean side of the lake, said the Zambezi River Authority, which manages the dam.
The north bank power station has an installed capacity of 1,080 megawatts (MW), while the south bank power station in Zimbabwe has a capacity of 1,050 MW.

PM Forms Committee: Govt Wants Private Sector Entry to Discos
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a 14-member Committee aimed at finding legal ways to create space for private sector participation in the business of power Distribution Companies (Discos), well informed sources told Business Recorder.
Headed by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the Committee will comprise Shahid Khaqan Abbasi (former Prime Minister), Minister for Power, Minister for Communications, Minister for Privatisation, Minister for Investment, SAPM on Government Effectiveness, Secretary Power Division, Secretary Privatisation Division, Secretary Board of Investment, CEO Public Private Partnership Authority, Member Energy, Planning Commission, Managing Director, PPIB and Mohsin Abbas Syed, Consultant, Privatisation Commission. The Committee may co-opt additional expert members for their specialized input.
USADF Calls for Proposal to Finance Local Off-Grid Companies
The US government agency has just launched a call for proposals under the Off-Grid Energy Challenge. This initiative aims to increase electricity generation for unserved/underserved African communities through sustainable business model solutions. Companies contributing to electrification via off-grid systems can obtain a grant from the US African Development Foundation (USADF).
Only private companies and African-owned or led organizations are eligible for the USADF Off-Grid Energy Challenge. Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia have issued expressions of interest.

Masdar Signs Clean Energy Projects Agreement with Kyrgyzstan
Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company has revealed that it has made an agreement with Kyrgyzstan for the development of a pipeline of renewable projects up to 1 GW in the country. This includes an initial solar project of 200 MW that is expected to commence operations by 2026.
Masdar has signed an implementation agreement with the country Ministry of Energy after an MoU was signed between the two parties in April 2022. Based on the agreement, Masdar would explore and invest in a range of renewable energy projects such as ground-mounted solar, floating solar and hydropower.
