AEDC Working to Restore Power Supply to FCE Okene, Says Mgt

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, has disclosed that it was working with the management of the Federal College of Education, Okene, Kogi State, to restore power supply to the institution.

The institution had over the weekend lamented that it was unable to resume for second semester after its transformer broke down leaving the institution without public power supply for over 42 days.

AEDC in a statement yesterday in Abuja said it was working hard to fix the faulty transformer and restore electricity supply to the school.

It debunked reports that it was at loggerhead with FCE management, adding the school is an important customer to the business.

The company explained that it places a high premium on its customers thus will never deliberately inflict pain or discomfort to them.

While the company acknowledges the existence of the complaint presented by the FCE, AEDC stated that it has since swung into action by ensuring the swift repairs of the damaged transformer bearing in mind the sensitivity of the role of FCE in Nigeria.

Ossiomo to Distribute 1,000KW to Each of Edo’s Three Districts

Managing Director, Ossiomo Power Company, Dr. Uwa Igiehon, has said the company plans to generate and distribute 1,000 kilowatts to each of Edo’s three senatorial districts.

The Ossiomo power project is a 95MW power generation and distribution facility birthed through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the Edo State Government and Ossiomo Power Company.

The facility powers government offices and hospitals and streetlights in the Benin metropolis, and is being extended to other parts of the state, according to a statement by Crusoe Osagie, media aide to the state governor.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Igiehon said with the company’s planned increase in power generation, industries, businesses and communities in Edo will have access to power at a very competitive cost.

“Presently, statistics have shown that while the United Kingdom has a 100 per cent access to electricity and other western countries have about 80 per cent, Nigeria only has an estimated 50 per cent access to power. However, with our planned upsurge in power generation, industries, businesses and communities in Edo will have 100 per cent access at a competitive cost,” he said.

Nigeria Approves Governance Framework for $3bn Hydropower Plant

The National Council on Privatisation (NCP) has approved a governance framework for the development of a $3 billion hydropower plant in Makurdi, Benue State, which will provide 1,650 megawatts of power.

The approval was given at the NCP meeting chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Laolu Akande, Osinbajo’s spokesman, said it is expected to be the largest hydropower project in West Africa.

He said with the NCP’s nod, the development of the project, which emerged by way of an unsolicited proposal, would proceed through the public-private partnership arrangement subject to compliance with all existing laws including the Public Procurement Act.

Akande said the project would be the first of its kind in the country and is expected to provide 1,650 megawatts of power.

According to him, there is a project steering committee of the NCP to provide leadership and high-level support to ensure the success of the transaction.

No Digital Economy Without Stable Electricity – Sahara Power

The Group Managing Director, Sahara Power Group, Kola Adesina, has stated that without adequate supply of electricity, the target of digitalising Nigeria’s economy may not be achieved.

Sahara Power is a major player that operates in the electricity generation and distribution arms of the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry.

In his remarks after receiving the Nigerian Society of Engineers’ honorary fellowship award in Abuja, Adesina told the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and other senior government officials at the event, that the country’s current power output was so insufficient.

Buhari was represented at the ongoing event by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Senator Adeleke Mamora. The communications minister had earlier stated that the government was making efforts to meet its digital economy target for Nigeria.

But while making his remarks after receiving the NSE award, the Sahara Power boss told the audience that the about 4,500 megawatts of electricity being generated and distributed across the country was too meagre for Nigeria.

He said, “If you look at where we are in Nigeria today, over 200 million people and we are doing just about 4,500MW of electricity. When the representative of the Minister of Communications spoke earlier, I looked around and thought that there is something far more important and significant than advancing the frontiers of communication and digital economy in Nigeria.

Uncoordinated Execution of Power Sector Plans to Blame for Electricity Supply Deficit

The Group Managing Director of Sahara Group, Kola Adesina, has blamed the uncoordinated implementation of power sector strategies as partly responsible for the inability to achieve sufficiency in electricity supply nationwide.

Speaking when he received the fellowship award of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in Abuja,  the Sahara Group boss stated that industry players were used to working in silos, thereby hobbling the ability to see the sector as a full value chain.

He stressed that it was unacceptable that a country of over 200 million persons could only generate and transmit about 4,500MW to its citizens.

Describing the situation as appalling despite the country having some of the best  brains worldwide,  he argued that this excellence must be translated to making the sector work in Nigeria.

He dedicated the NSE recognition to the over 5,000 staff of Sahara Group, including those of Egbin power, Ikeja Electric, First Independent Power and others, explaining that without reliable power , there is no way the economy can grow.

“ In Nigeria today, we have over 200 million people, but appallingly, we are  able to only dispense just about 4500 megawatts of electricity. Without electricity there can’t be a digital economy. Without electricity you cannot communicate, without electricity, there’s no agriculture and without electricity, the quality of life will be boring.

Seplat Energy Targets Fresh 2000mw from Anoh, Sapele Gas Projects

Seplat Energy Plc, leading Nigerian energy company listed on the Nigerian Exchange and the London Stock Exchange, has said its commitment to a just and affordable energy transition is unwavering.

Unless Nigerians Get 24/7 Electricity Supply, We Have Failed — Sahara Group MD

Stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) have been challenged to step up their game to ensure supply of 24 hours a day, seven days a week electricity to the teeming Nigerian population.

Group managing director of Sahara Group, Kola Adesina, gave this challenge yesterday in Abuja after been conferred with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) honorary fellowship award in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of engineering in the country.

Adesina said, “I looked at where we are in Nigeria today. Over 200 million people and appallingly we are only able to dispense just about 4500 megawatts of electricity. I am here to simply say this until we can guarantee 24/7 electricity to Nigerians, we have failed and we cannot afford to fail.”

He lamented that the quantum of energy in the system today is absolutely insufficient for our population. “Our population is growing phenomenally. Whereas the infrastructure that needs to deliver the key services to serve as the engine grow the GDP is lagging behind. There is a need for each and every one of us

to go deeper into our minds and search for solutions that will help electrify Nigeria. The whole world is looking at us and wondering why are we in this situation. Why can’t we have light?”
