Power Discos Owe Gencos N2tr
Electricity generation companies (GenCos) say they are not producing at full capacity because “our generation is driven by demand” but “Nigerians don’t want power” as the national grid cannot take up full supply.
GenCos also blame power distribution companies (DisCos) for part of the problem, disclosing they owe GenCos N2 trillion.
“GenCos are not owed N500 billion as accepted by NBET [the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading].
“We are owed N2 trillion, while we owe suppliers N1 trillion,” Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC) Executive Secretary Joy Ogaji clarified in Lagos.
She said the operations of GenCos are being hampered by the money owed them by NIBET, the manager and administrator of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NES)I.
NIBET collects tariffs on behalf of the Transmission Company Nigeria (TCN), GenCos, and DisCos.
Ogaji disclosed that although GenCos currently have enough generating capacity, the market is not available as DisCos cannot take all power generated.

Azura Pays FG 40% of $30m Monthly Invoice —MD
THE Managing Director of Azura-Edo Power Plant, Mr. Edu Okeke, has disclosed that 40 percent of the company’s monthly invoice of about $30 million to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc, NBET, goes back to the Federal Government as payment for gas supply and repayment of loans taken for the construction of the plant.
Okeke told journalists at the plant that the company pays $10 million monthly to gas suppliers including Seplat Petroleum, Nigerian Petroleum Development Company, NPDC, and the Nigerian Gas Company, subsidiaries of NNPC Limited.
He said the company also pays the Bank of Industry, BoI, for the loan collected from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to build the plant.
He explained: “Every power plant invoice is made up of two parts, capacity and energy produced. Capacity is what you can put on the grid but only those companies with effective PPAs (power purchase agreement) get paid for capacity. We have five of these in the country: Azura, Omotosho, Olorunsogo, Okpai and Afam.

Deal Signed for Northern Corridor Electricity Transmission Project in Nigeria
The government and the French Development Agency, AFD have signed a deal worth €25 million for the Northern corridor electricity transmission project in Nigeria. This project will increase transmission capacity in the nation’s northwest and boost the supply of electricity in the country.
The agreement was signed in Abuja by Clem Agba, minister of state for budget and national planning. He noted that the project was in line with the National Development Plan 2021–2025.
According to Agba, the agreement’s signing demonstrated that Nigeria was moving forward with the development plan.
The minister of state for budget and national planning said, “I want to express my gratitude to the French government, the EU, and AFD for their involvement in Nigeria’s electricity industry. Particularly with regard to the transmission lines and substations for the Northern corridor project.
Power is incredibly important, as seen by the agreement we are signing today. This project will assist TCN in implementing its Transmission Expansion Plan through the construction of transmission lines in nine northern states.”
Azura Not Interested in Taking Over Govt Assets
In this interview, the Managing Director of Azura Power West Africa, owners of the 461mw Edo-Azura power plant, Edu Okeke, speaks on the purported plan to take over government assets in case of any default in the deal as well as the recent controversy surrounding the $30 million monthly bill remitted to the firm. Emmanuel Addeh presents the excerpts.
Tell us a bit about how Azura operates and the whole purported misgivings by the National Assembly about your services.
Azura was designed to be a flagship. But when people ask who signed off on Azura, the connotation is ‘who messed up’. A lot lot of people worked on the project and I know that the National Assembly has looked into this matter. When I spoke to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman, he laughed.
Since the Azura story started, the EFCC has looked at everything. If somebody had done anything untoward, by now they would be in jail. The former Chief Of Staff, Abba Kyari of blessed memory, I remember that for four years, somebody had fed him with a wrong story about us. He didn’t want to see us.
FG Accelerate Mambilla Power Project- North-East Governors
he North-East governors, during the 7th North-East Governors Forum[NEGF], deliberated on issues affecting the region. During the meeting held in the Government House, Gombe, Gombe state, the governors shared their concerns over the poor state of power supply in the region.
A communique read by the Yobe state governor, Mai Mala Buni, stated that the region receives only about 5% of total allocated power from the national grid despite accounting for about 30% of the country’s landmass and 14% of the total population. He noted that the impact of adequate power supply eventually trickles down to economic growth and security, resulting in improved livelihoods. The governors called for the federal government to see the accelerated completion of the 3050MW Mambilla Hydroelectricity project in Taraba state.

Cummings Assures Reliable Electricity Nationwide
The Standard Bearer of the Collaborating Political Parties CPP Mr. Alexander Cummings says with the enormous resources and great potential of Liberia, no households and institutions should be reliance on private generators as the main source of electricity supply.
Liberia with 43, 000 square miles and estimated five million population, less than six percent have access to reliable electricity supply and safe drinking water.
Mr. Cummings said improper and inefficient management of the country’s vast resources, has deprived Liberians of the basic essential necessities to live a better and prosperous life.
The CPP Standard Bearer made the assertions, on Sunday, September 18, when he served as guest speaker at the Green Pastures School in Marshall, lower Margibi County.
Cummings said to surmount the prevailing difficult economic and harsh living conditions, Liberians must remain hopeful and with faith in God.
Cummings said with hard work, sacrifice and unity amongst Liberians, a CPP government is committed to restoring basic essential social services including electricity and safe drinking water nationwide.

5mwp Solar Farm to Power COP 27
The 27th United Nations climate change conference, 2022, to be hosted in Egypt, is taking the green energy transition to the next level. The conference to be held in November is said to be powered by a 5MWp solar farm as a sign of Egypt’s commitment to energy transition and ecological conservation. The ministry of electricity and energy and the Governor of South Sinai are overseers of this ambitious project aligned to Egypt’s commitment to achieving 42% electricity generation from renewables by 2030.
The power plant project is almost complete and is implemented by a Cario-based company, AlTawakol Electric. The project is executed in partnership with GTCI and Intro Sustainable Resources(ISR) handlers of engineering, procurement, and construction(EPC) contracts. Egypt’s goal is to become a hub for clean energy production in the North African region. The country has an installed renewable energy capacity of 6226MW in 20221 and is currently developing hydrogen infrastructure to include the installed capacity of renewable energy. This initiative has attracted investments from large multinationals and is expected to offset over 4000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
