We’ve Spent N500m to Improve Electricity in Minna, Residents Now Enjoy 12 Hours of Supply — AEDC
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, says it has spent over N500 million to improve electricity supply from about five hours to over 15 hours per day in Minna, Niger.
Mahamud Keni, Regional Manager, AEDC, Niger region, disclosed this on Tuesday to News Agency of Nigeria in Minna.
“The financial implication of the equipment we used to improve power supply in Minna is over N500 million,” he said.
Mr Keni said that the AEDC had highlighted a lot of challenges facing electricity supply in the state and perfected strategies on how to tackle them.
“We came up with a lot of strategies and one of them was replacement of damaged equipments responsible for the epileptic power supply experienced by consumers in the state,” he said.
He explained that the AEDC replaced 11 damaged panels which controlled the electricity feeders in Minna and its environs.
The area manager added that the damaged panels had been in operation for long, making the company to combine two or three feeders to one panel.

Striking Workers Crash Power Generation to 43M’
The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Power, has said the recent one-day strike by workers of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) crashed Nigeria’s power generation from a peak of 4,829.5 megawatts to as low as 43MW.
Staff of the transmission company, under the aegis of the National Union of Electricity Employees, shut down the country’s power grid last Wednesday, throwing businesses and other power consumers into darkness.
They went on strike in protest against a compulsory promotion interview for principal managers, unpaid entitlement, among other issues, and crippled the country’s power supply for several hours before the intervention of the Federal Government.
Latest figures obtained in Abuja on Sunday on the country’s power grid performance indicated that peak power generation on Tuesday before the workers’ strike was 4,829.5MW.
But as the workers turned off the power stations one after the other during their industrial action on Wednesday, as seen in viral videos that were circulated online, electricity generation on the grid eventually collapsed to 43MW.

FG Takes Over Four DisCos
The Federal Government has completed the takeover of four electricity distribution companies and constituted the Board of the Nigeria Electricity Liability Management Company.
Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, had on Friday, said the newly constituted Board of the Nigeria Electricity Liability Management Company(NELMCO) would enhance ongoing efforts to resolve the liabilities relating to tariff shortfalls for power distribution companies nationwide.
According to a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, Osinbajo made the disclosure in his remarks delivered virtually at the inauguration of the new 10-member Board of NELMCO.
The statement was titled ‘FG moves to resolve tariff shortfalls in power sector, as Osinbajo inaugurates Nigeria electricity liability management company’s board.’
The Vice President also mandated the Board composed of Ministers of Finance, Power, and others to protect the interests of the society, particularly ordinary citizens.
Before Friday’s inauguration, NELMCO had been running without a duly constituted board since the first board was inaugurated in 2013 and dissolved shortly after.

The day’s business had remained seamlessly for hours until sudden darkness enveloped John Okechukwu’s shop last Wednesday, disrupting the day’s operations for the young entrepreneur. Mr John, who runs a photography and general printing business—colloquially referred to as “Business Centre”—at Yakoyo area of Ojodu in Lagos State, said the power outage affected his business at a time his generating set didn’t operate optimally.
“We were able to fix the generator after a while, to restore power, but many other businesses and houses that had no alternative source of electricity had their day messed up by the power outage,” he said.
“You can then imagine my anger when we heard the next day that it was due to electricity workers’ strike over plans to make them go through a promotional interview. It was very pathetic.”
Like Mr John, many businesses and households were thrown into darkness last Wednesday when the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) embarked on a strike that left cities and towns across Nigeria in confusion after workers shut down power stations.

Minister Seeks Increased Investments in Electricity Industry
The Minister of Power, Mr Abubakar Aliyu, on Tuesday, urged investors to tap into the numerous investment opportunities that abound in Nigeria’s Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
This is contained in a statement by Mr Odutayo Oluseyi, Assistant Director, Information/Press, Ministry of Power issued in Abuja.
Aliyu was quoted to have said this at the 2-day Nigeria-India business forum.
He said that with the commitment made by President Muhammadu Buhari, at the Conference of Parties’ 26th Annual Summit (COP26) in Glasgow, where Nigeria planned to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2060.
The minister said structures were being put in place to increase the opportunity for investment in Gas-to-Power and other gas-related opportunities.

Siemens Power Initiative: Federal Govt Investing $2bn in Distribution, Transmission – Osinbajo
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has revealed that the federal government is investing more than $2 billion under the Siemens Presidential Power Initiative to boost transmission and distribution of electricity from the nation’s national grid.
Speaking during the formal inauguration of the National Council on Infrastructure in Abuja yesterday, the vice president said the collaboration between the federal government and the private sector will not only ensure effective coordination of the infrastructure development across the nation, and all sectors of the economy, but also bridge the nation’s infrastructural gaps.
Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement yesterday in Abuja, said the vice president virtually inaugurated the National Council on Infrastructure set up by President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to the vice president, such collaboration will also bridge the nation’s infrastructure gaps.
“For efficient and effective implementation of infrastructure projects, the National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIIMP) recommended the establishment of the National Council on Infrastructure and its Technical Working Group (TWG).”
President Akufo-Addo Commissions 13mw Kaleo Solar Power Project
The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has commissioned the Volta River Authority’s thirteen megawatt (13MW) solar power project, a project whose lawn was cut in February 2020.This is further testimony to the fact that what President Akufo-Addo Addo promises, he delivers.
According to President Akufo-Addo, the Project, which is the first phase of what will eventually be a twenty-eight megawatt (28MW) plant at Kaleo, and reiterates the Government’s commitment to further diversify the country’s power generation portfolio and increase the country’s renewable energy generation mix.
Speaking at the ceremony in Kaleo, in the Upper West region, on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, the president indicated that the Kaleo solar plant, together with ongoing interventions in the area of energy efficiency, use of natural gas for thermal generation, adoption of cleaner cooking solutions, decarbonisation of oil production, among others, is helping Ghana accelerate the achievement of its Nationally Determined Contributions, as presented at COP26 in Glasgow, UK.
“The Akufo-Addo government has invested heavily in the electricity transmission network, which will allow us to evacuate more renewable energy through the national grid, to support the extension of electricity to all parts of Ghana.
